Llívia is a small village with a millennial history and, since the 17th century, one of the most unique enclaves in Europe.

Before the arrival of the Romans, Llívia was already an important settlement: an Iberian oppidum strategically located on a hill overlooking the Segre valley and the natural passes of Cerdanya. With Romanization, the town adopted the name Iulia Lybica, in honour of Livia, wife of Augustus, and became an important civitas within the region, maintaining a significant administrative and strategic role. For centuries, it was the capital of Cerdanya until this role shifted to Hix. Its elevated position and the presence of Roman and Iberian remains testify to its long continuity of occupation and its importance as a centre of control and communication in the Pyrenees.

During the Visigothic period, Llívia maintained a significant military role thanks to the castrum Libiae, which the rebel Paulus used as a base in his revolt against King Wamba in 672. Over time, the Castle of Llívia became a key fortress on the northern frontier and contributed to the formation of the County of Cerdanya, serving as the residence of counts such as Sunifred I, father of Wilfred the Hairy. From the 12th century onwards, the creation of Puigcerdà reduced Llívia’s administrative importance, though not its strategic value. In this context, King James I granted the town charter in 1257, allowing inhabitants to settle at the foot of the castle, giving rise to the lower medieval settlement that defines the current urban structure.

In the 17th century, the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659) redefined the border between France and Spain, transferring 33 villages of Cerdanya to French territory. However, Llívia was excluded from this transfer because it was classified as a “town” rather than a “village”, preserving its status as part of the Spanish Crown and making it the only Spanish enclave within France. Later, the Treaty of Llívia (1660) precisely defined its borders and established a corridor connecting the town to the rest of Spain through French territory. Despite its unique position and periods of border tension, Llívia has maintained its Catalan and Spanish identity to this day, integrating into modern cross-border cooperation dynamics and preserving a unique historical heritage.

Today, Llívia is a municipality that has successfully turned its unique geographical situation into a defining feature, making it one of the most distinctive villages in the Pyrenees.

In cultural and heritage terms, Llívia preserves some of the most significant historical elements of Cerdanya. Among them stands out the Esteve Pharmacy Museum, considered one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe, now part of the municipal museum and home to a valuable collection of ceramic jars, prescriptions and historical medical instruments. The ruins of the Castle of Llívia, located on the hill overlooking the town, are also a direct testament to its medieval past and strategic importance over the centuries. In addition, the municipality features rich religious heritage, including the Gothic Church of Our Lady of the Angels, built on a former Romanesque church and now used as a cultural venue for concerts and events. This heritage ensemble is complemented by other remains such as the Roman Forum, still under excavation, highlighting Llívia’s historical continuity since ancient times.

At the same time, modern-day Llívia is a vibrant destination for tourism and nature, taking full advantage of its privileged setting in the Cerdanya valley. The area offers hiking routes, cycling trails and outdoor activities with spectacular views of the Pyrenees, making it a popular destination for families and mountain sports enthusiasts. Gastronomy also plays a key role, combining Catalan and French influences and contributing to the town’s charm, with local restaurants offering traditional mountain cuisine and regional artisanal products.

In summary, Llívia combines heritage, culture and nature in a privileged environment, preserving its Catalan identity within French territory.
